The following is a special briefing by James Borton, Editor-in-Chief of the South China Sea NewsWire, dated 20 September 2024.

With President Joe Biden hosting the Quad Leaders from Australia, India and Japan in Delaware, it is timely to explain his renewed security measures in the Indo-Pacific.

This meeting transpires in the midst of continuing global issues from the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and China’s increasing aggression in the South China Sea. Despite having started out as an informal group, this association is starting to resemble a formal alliance of concerned countries looking to address regional development issues while also acting as a check on China. The SCSNW agrees that this association, formal or not, assumes an important role in advancing a shared strategic vision in the region.

For more explanation, the SCSNW recommends reading these impressive reports from CSIS and the Wilson Center.
